4 Ways To Treat Glaucoma

Posted on: 27 November 2015

If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, then you are probably concerned about losing your  vision. Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the eye's optic nerve. It can also get worse over time. Here are four ways to treat glaucoma.

Laser Trabeculoplasty

Laser trabeculoplasty is a laser procedure that increases the outflow of internal eye fluid. This procedure is performed by using a laser to create small holes in the area where the iris and cornea meets. It is one of the most effective treatment at decreasing internal eye pressure.

Trabeculectomy

A trabeculectomy is an option when nonsurgical treatments are unable to reduce intraocular pressure on your eye. Intraocular pressure can cause damage to your optic nerve. This surgical procedure creates a new opening for fluid to drain from your eye. A trabeculectomy accomplishes this by removing a portion of your eye.

An eye stent is inserted into the eye during a trabeculectomy. It decreases high eye pressure and increases the outflow of intraocular fluid. Stents are also called glaucoma implants.

This device creates an alternative route for the fluid to drain from eyes. It also prevents fluid from getting into your eye's clogged or damaged filtration drainage canals. Stents are made from silicone, biocompatible metals and polypropylene.

Eye Drops

The main goal of treatment is to control eye pressure. Eye drops are only effective when you use them as prescribed and regularly. It is important to maximize the amount of eye drops that get in your eye.

To apply, you need to close your eyes for a couple of minutes after inserting the drops. It also helps to place your finger over the corner of your eyelid. This closes the tear duct that drains down into your nose.

Pills

Pills are sometimes prescribed to work along with eye drops. They must be taken several times a day to work effectively. This treatment also decreases the amount of fluid that your eye produces.

Benefits of Exercise

You are always hearing about living a healthy lifestyle and to get regular exercise. Regular exercise can help with glaucoma. Moderate exercises like jogging or walking can reduce intraocular pressure. It is beneficial to your health to exercise on a regular basis.

If you are having problems with your eyes, then you need to schedule an appointment (with professionals, such as those from Country Hills Eye Center). It helps to know the correct diagnosis for your condition.Your doctor can help with deciding on the best treatment plan.

Welcome to Sara's Site

Hi there! My name is Sara Jerba. I'm no doctor, but I'm very familiar with them due to experience. You could say I was a sickly child. Between various allergies and a few other conditions, I got to be very good friends with my doctors and nurses. Although I hate staying overnight in the hospital, I do feel quite at home there. Now, don't feel sorry for me. Most of my conditions have eased or even abated entirely as I've grown up. And none of them were ever life-threatening--just inconvenient. It's actually been very positive in the long run; it's brought a lot of wonderful people and important knowledge into my life that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
